FIFPRO delegation makes multi-purpose visit to Qatar

26 August 2021
During a multi-purpose trip to Qatar this week, FIFPRO has met with leaders of the Qatar Players Association with a view to helping the recently-established organization to support local and expatriate professional footballers who work in the Gulf state.

A delegation including FIFPRO General Secretary Jonas Baer-Hoffmann and Deputy General Secretary Simon Colosimo held productive discussions with the QPA about the employment rights of footballers, and discussed how to ensure that players have equal influence to other stakeholders in employment matters. The QPA has been a FIFPRO member since 2018.

FIFPRO is also using the trip to Qatar to discuss conditions for migrant workers in other industries as part of a cooperation agreement with the global union, Building and Woodworkers’ International, that aims to build an enduring legacy for all workers after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

During the trip, the FIFPRO delegation held positive talks with Hani Ballan, Chief Executive Officer of the Qatar Stars League, and Mansour Alansari, General Secretary of the Qatar Football Association, about working together to building a strong foundation for the domestic game that allows professional footballers to develop their careers.

“It is fantastic to spend some time face to face with the Qatar Players Association again to discuss ongoing matters and make sure we are present to support them to achieve their objectives,” Colosimo said. “It is also positive to join the QPA in their meetings with the F.A. and QSL in order to build on the positive impact of having a FIFPRO member player association embedded in the dialogue on how to ensure that the strategic objectives for football in Qatar are achieved and continue to grow after 2022”.
