On a night where many familiar faces made their World 11 return, six players were voted by their fellow professionals into the team of the year for the first time.

A record-breaking number of professional footballers selected their 2024 Men’s and Women’s World 11, with 28,322 votes coming from 70 countries.

Men’s football players were asked to select their team of the year based on performances during the period from 21 August 2023 to 14 July 2024 inclusive; women’s football players were asked to select their team of the year based on performances from 21 August 2023 to 10 August 2024 inclusive.

Ederson

Ederson’s performances between the sticks caught the attention of his fellow professionals who voted him into the team of the year. The Brazilian stopper was second in the voting list, just 30 votes behind Jude Bellingham (11,176). 

Ederson is the ninth goalkeeper to be voted into the Men’s World 11. Iker Casillas is the stopper with the most appearances (5), followed by Manuel Neuer (4), Gianluigi Buffon (3), Alisson Becker (2), Thibaut Courtois (2), Dida (1), Gianluigi Donnarumma (1), David de Gea (1) and Ederson (1).

Dani Carvajal

Country: Spain

The 2023/24 season was certainly a vintage one for Dani Carvajal. The Real Madrid and Spain right-back played a pivotal role for club and country as he went on to lift La Liga, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA EURO.

Carvajal makes the team of the year for the first time at 32 years of age.

Antonio Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger has shown himself to be one of the world’s leading defenders in recent years and his fellow professional footballers took notice of his performances in the 2023/24 season especially, voting him into the World 11 for the first time.

Club: Manchester City
Country: Spain

Rodri was an influential figure in the Manchester City and Spain midfield, where he helped City to a fourth consecutive Premier League title and Spain to UEFA EURO glory. He was named Player of the Tournament at EURO 2024.

Barbra Banda

Club: Orlando Pride
Country: Zambia

Barbra Banda made history by becoming the first African player to be voted into the Women’s World 11. The Zambian demonstrated her goalscoring prowess by helping Orlando Pride to a NWSL Championship and Shield double and netting four goals at the 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Teenage sensation Linda Caicedo is the youngest player to make the Women’s World 11 at 19 years of age; Canada’s Kadeisha Buchanan Canada’s won the award at 20 years, 3 months and 13 days when selected in the 2015 edition.
