Liverpool and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo made the most appearances of any men’s player in the calendar year of 2024, according to new findings released by FIFPRO and Football Benchmark.
FIFPRO’s Player Workload Monitoring (PWM) platform, operated in collaboration with Football Benchmark, tracks metrics relating to the match load, recovery and travel of over 1,800 professional men’s and women’s players worldwide. The data has now been updated to 31 December 2024.
Data from men’s players involved in the sample shows that Gakpo topped the appearances list for 2024 with a staggering 71 games for club and country. Behind the Dutchman with 70 appearances was Julian Alvarez (Atletico Madrid/Argentina) and Jules Kounde (Barcelona/France).
Kounde was the outfield player with the most minutes (6,522) played in 2024, with 73 percent of that being back-to-back minutes. Last year the defender made 51 back-to-back appearances; a match played within five days of the previous one.
Alvarez, who represented Argentina at the Copa America and Olympics in 2024, travelled the most of players in the sample who played over 60 games. The striker amassed 175 hours of international travel which saw him travel 132,063 kilometres last year.

The expansion of UEFA club competitions and the introduction of a 32-team FIFA Club World Cup means some elite-level players will be subjected to even more competitive games in the second half of the 2024/25 season.
The workload findings come a couple of months after a report published by Belgian University KU Leuven said that the professional football sector is failing in its duty to apply required safety standards for players and, as a result, is violating existing legal frameworks at a European and global level.
The report, which was commissioned by FIFPRO, was submitted to European Commission and national courts as part of ongoing legal proceedings regarding the international match calendar.
In October 2024, FIFPRO Europe and European Leagues, together with LaLiga, filed a complaint to the European Commission against FIFA over its conduct concerning the imposition of the international match calendar, including decisions relating to the Club World Cup 2025.
