FIFPRO and Kenyan player union KEFWA have filed an appeal on behalf of the Kenya Women’s National Football Team that seeks to overturn the cancellation of its final 2022 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifying match, the AWCON also being the qualifying tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The appeal was filed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Football Kenya Federation and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations.
The Kenya Women’s National Football Team is seeking to overturn the decision of the Football Kenya Federation to withdraw its participation from the AWCON qualifier against Uganda that was scheduled to take place over two legs in February.
In January, the Football Kenya Federation informed CAF of its decision to withdraw from the matches as it allegedly was “unable to independently plan and successfully execute any international matches”. The Kenya Women’s National Football Team disputes this statement and is of the view that the decision taken was irrational, arbitrary and unlawful.
