The Swiss professional footballers association SAFP celebrated the best of all footballers in the Swiss league. Xherdan Shaqiri was the night’s biggest winner, just like last year….

The SAFP invited all professional footballers in Switzerland to vote for the best players in the nation’s premier league and second division, the Super League and the Challenge League respectively. On Sunday November 25th the winners received their awards during the annual Swiss Golden Player Awards Gala, which the SAFP organized with their colleagues of the Swiss professional ice hockey players association (SAIP) for the sixth consecutive year.

The footballers picked Xherdan Shaqiri as the Golden Player of the 2011-2012 season. The left-footed winger played an instrumental role in another successful season for FC Basel, which retained its Swiss championship title and also conquered the Swiss Cup. Shaqiri - who also received the trophy for Best Young Player - contributed with 14 goals. Following last season, Shaqiri (21) joined German side Bayern Munich.

Shaqiri was not the only player from FC Basel who was celebrated in Bern. Yann Sommer was chosen Best Goalkeeper, Aleksander Dragovic Best Defender and Alexander Frei Best Striker.

The prize for Best Midfielder did not end up at FC Basel, as Young Boys’ Alexander Farnerud was selected by his peers. Oscar Scarione was crowned Best Player of the Challenge League.
