Peter Schmeichel, Andrej Shevchenko and Michel Platini will be three of the many football legends who will participate in the 2012 European Footballers Golf Classic in Kiev, organised by FIFPro and French sports agency Pass for Sport. Some of Europe’s greatest footballers will meet on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th June for the third edition of FIFPro's golf tournament.

The Kiev Golf Club will host the 2012 European Footballers Golf Classic. In collaboration with Pass for Sport, FIFPro Division Europe will welcome 33 former football greats to the capital of Ukraine, one of the two host nations of this year’s UEFA European Championship (EURO 2012).

The players originate from thirteen different countries. FIFPro is pleased to welcome former world champions and European champions amongst the participants. UEFA president and EURO 1984 winner Michel Platini will tee off, alongside Christian Karembeu, 1998 World champion, 2000 European champion and ambassador of the European Footballers Golf Classic.

Germany can boast  a team with two world champions: Stefan Reuter and Karl-Heinz Riedle were both successful in 1990. Italy sends a fourth world champion: Giancarlo Antognoni was the midfield orchestrator when La Squadra Azzurra lifted the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Denmark brings in three players who played the EURO 1992 final and beat Germany (including Stefan Reuter and Karl-Heinz Riedle) to pick up the trophy: John Faxe Jensen (who scored in the final), Henrik Larsen (top scorer of the tournament) and Peter Schmeichel.

The Czech Republic will be represented by four players from the EURO 1996 squad that made it to the finals, only to lose to Germany after a golden goal. Ladislav Maier, Petr Kuba, Radek Bejbl and Karel Poborksy will all play in Kiev.

Also featuring at this tournament, will be players such as Teddy Sheringham, Ronald de Boer, Pierre van Hooijdonk, Marc Degryse, Les Ferdinand and Donato.

Last but certainly not least, FIFPro is delighted to announce that Andrej Shevchenko will make an appearance at the 2012 European Footballers Golf Classic. Last week he scored twice to help Ukraine beat Sweden in the EURO 2012 group stage. Unfortunately it was not enough to get his country through to the quarter finals. Though a small comfort, but FIFPro expects the Ukrainian captain and 2004 Ballon d’Or winner will try to win the 2012 European Footballers Golf Classic instead …
