On 14th January 2011, Oslo will play host to the first FIFPro Winter Tournament. The players’ unions of Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden will be participating in this new event for footballers seeking a new club.

The FIFPro Winter Tournament is an initiative of NISO (Norway), SFS (Sweden), JPY (Finland) and the PFAI (Ireland). With this event, these players’ unions are aiming to give their members who are currently without a club the chance to showcase their talent in the hope of signing a new contract at a club.

The four associations are following the example of their colleagues at FIFPro who last summer organised the sixth edition of the FIFPro Tournament. That tournament which was held in the Netherlands had participating teams from no less than eight players’ unions, namely those of Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland and the host country.

The spectators at the tournament included Magnus Erlingmark (SFS) and Joachim Waltin (NISO), two of the initiators of the FIFPro Winter Tournament 2011. Since the national competitions in Finland, Ireland, Norway and Sweden are played during the summer, they want to help their members without clubs during the winter months.

The first FIFPro Winter Tournament will be taking place on Friday 14th January 2011 at the Vallhall Arena in Oslo, an indoor sports hall. The four players’ unions organising the event will be inviting scouts, coaches and other representatives from clubs in Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe to attend the tournament and see the players in action.
