With a big smile on his face, Lionel Messi officially launched the vote for the 2012 FIFA FIFPro World XI. The reigning Best Player in the World filled in his ballot and invited all other professional footballers worldwide to follow his example.

‘I have picked my FIFA FIFPro World XI. Now it is your turn’, Messi said, encouraging all other players to join the vote for this year’s World XI.

It has become a yearly tradition for FIFPro. Each year representatives of the worldwide professional footballers association visit the reigning Best football player in the world (FIFA Ballon d’Or), who has the honour to launch the vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI. For the third year in a row, FIFPro took to Barcelona to meet Lionel Messi.

This year, FIFPro sends out 45,000 ballots all over the world. With help from all affiliated professional footballers associations, FIFPro will distribute the voting forms among all professional footballers in Asia, America, Africa and Europe. They are invited to compose their favorite team consisting of 1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 3 midfielders and 3 strikers.

The players who receive the most votes, will be celebrated during the FIFA Ballon d’Or in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday 7 January 2013.

Lionel Messi is one of the biggest favorites to once again be called upon stage to collect a FIFA FIFPro World XI award.

Messi told FIFPro: ‘It's a great prize because of what it means, because of those who do the voting, they are your own professional colleagues. Anyone they want will be a winner, the one they choose, and that makes it a very good prize.’
