The Footballers Union of Botswana (FUB) honoured the top players in their country's game with a special awards ceremony for the Best Player of the Year and the Best XI of the Year.

In the weeks leading up to the event, FUB collected the votes of the players from all 16 Botswana’s Premier League teams.

Olekantse Mambo took the most important award at the inaugural awards ceremony held in Gabarone.

The Orapa United defender was voted as the Best Player by his peers. He was the most valuable player for his team that finished third in the league and won the Mascom Top 8, which is a cup competition for Botswana’s top 8 teams.

Mambo's award consisted of a special ‘golden’ shirt and 10,000 pula (approximately USD 900) deposited on a savings account.

“It is a good initiative by the union to organise a players’ event,” Mambo said. ”To be voted for by your colleagues is humbling, especially as you played with and against them.”

“I am really happy to be given this award. It shows that I am growing as a player . I have to give credit to my coach for granting me a chance to play.”

Mambo was one of five Orapa United players in the FUB Best XI. Township Rollers, one of two teams that will play in the upcoming championship final, also contributed five players to the team.

Various former national team players handed the best 11 players their awards, a framed shirt and 2,000 pula on a savings account.
