Malta might be one of Europe’s smaller football nations but the country’s footballers still have a good understanding of who the best in their trade are.

The representatives of the Maltese professional footballers' associations are travelling the island to collect the votes of the players participating in the 2013 FIFA FIFPro World XI election. Local players from the Premier Division, 1st Division and the 2nd division are joining their peers from all over the world to cast their votes.

‘The players enjoy themselves voting for the FIFPro World XI’, says Konrad Sultana, MFPA spokesman. ‘Some players consult each other and share their preferences while others prefer to vote alone without discussing or showing their preferences’.

‘Obviously players do tend to vote and include their favourite stars and also players coming from their favourite teams. Names like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Andrea Pirlo, Philippe Lahm, Franck Ribéry, Gianluigi Buffon, Gareth Bale, Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are popular names on the ballots’.

That should be good news for the players mentioned, as the Maltese footballers appear to know which stars belong in the World XI. Last year the Maltese players selected almost the same eleven players that appeared on stage in the Zurich Kongresshaus to collect the World XI awards. Ten of the eleven players had also made it to the Maltese World XI: Iker Casillas, Dani Alves, Gérard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Messi, Ronaldo and Falcao. The only player voted by the Maltese who was not elected in the FIFA FIFPro World XI was Thiago Silva, Paris-Saint Germain’s Brazilian defender.

Players from the national team of Malta votë:

Roderick Briffa (Valletta FC), Alex Muscat (Sliema Wanderers), Ryan Fenech (Valletta FC),

Jacob Borg (Sliema Wanderers)  and Clifford Gatt Baldacchino (Sliema Wanderers)
