The Indian professional footballers’ association (FPAI) organized its second Debanjan Sen Memorial Cup. Players from the Indian national team and special guests from Costa Rica participated in this event.

Debenjan Sen was a FPAI executive when he died in June 2011 in a motorway accident. To commemorate Sen (then only 21 years of age), his FPAI colleagues organized a special tribute: the Debanjan Sen Memorial Cup.

This year, the FPAI once again organized this event. At the CC&FC ground in Calcutta two teams squared off against each other: Debanjan Sen’s former team CC&FC and the FPAI XI. For the occasion, FPAI president and former national team captain Bhaichung Bhutia joined CC&FC.

The FPAI XI was represented by national team players such as Gouramangi Singh, Rahim Nabi, Mehtab Hossain, Subrata Paul, Arindam Bhattacharya and ex internationals such as Dipendu Biswas and Basudeb Mondal. Two World Cup veterans from Costa Rica arrived in Calcutta: Steven Bryce (currently executive director of the Costa Rican footballers association Asojupro) and Carlos Hernandez.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw. For FPAI XI Dipendu Biswas opened the scoring in the 20th minute with Jahan Mehta (who is FPAI General Secretary but plays for CC&FC) equalizing just a minute later.

All players of both teams wore a Debanjan Sen Foundation Logo. This foundation has been formed by his parents and friends to support talented and young footballers who are from poorer families to play football in India.
