Balázs Megyeri ended his season with a very special trophy. The goalkeeper was named Best Hungarian Player Abroad of the 2011/2012 Season. More players than before participated in the vote organized by the Hungarian professional footballers’ association HLSZ.

‘This year we received more than 850 votes from players in the first and second division, which is quite extraordinary’, said Gábor Horváth, the president of the HLSZ, which organized this election for the 22nd time since 1991.

The HLSZ Gala was transmitted live on Hungarian television. The TV audience and all 500 guests witnessed the Hungarian union hand out eight trophies, seven of them voted by the players and one special award for this season’s top goal scorer.

Balázs Megyeri was named Best Hungarian Player Abroad and won the Ferenc Puskas Award. The goalkeeper collected another championship with Olympiacos in Greece, where he has become the number one option in goal of the Piraeus based club. Megyeri collected 37% of the votes in a close contest, beating Adám Bogdán (Bolton Wanderers, 28%) and Roland Juhász (Anderlecht, 20%), Balázs Dzsudzsák (Ahnzi, 9%) and Tamás Hajnal (VfB Stuttgart, 6%).

The Flórián Albert Award for Best Player in Hungary went to Péter Szakály of Hungarian champions Debreceni VSC. 43% of the players were of the opinion that the 25-year old midfielder was the best in Hungary.

Lajos Szücs received the Gábor Zsiborás Award for being the Best Goalkeeper. The Lombard Pápa goalkeeper won this award for the third consecutive year, which meant that he was allowed to keep the trophy according to Hungarian tradition.

Szücs was not the only one allowed to keep his trophy: Viktor Kassai was voted Best Referee, also for the third year in a row.

The other trophies went to:
Adám Bódi (Debreceni), Best Young Player U-21
Elemér Kondás (Debreceni), Best Coach
Adamo Coulibaly (Debreceni), Top Goalsorer
József Kanta (MTK), Best Player Division II

The HLSZ also organized two special Facebook polls where the public could vote for the most beautiful footballer's girlfriend and the most charming footballer of the year. The winners were Regina Dukai and Róbert Feczesin. Regina Dukai is a Hungarian celebritiy and the girlfriend of Róbert Feczsin who plays for Brescia Calcio in Italy.
