Ana Lucia Martinez Maldonado has started a new era for professional footballers association in Guatemala as the 26-year old forward became the first female player to join AFG.

Martinez is the most famous female player in Guatemala and the first female from her country to play in Spain. Last month the national team player switched clubs, leaving Rayo Vallecano for Sporting Huelva, the team which finished eighth in last season's Primera Division. Sporting will be her third club in Spain.

Proudly, AFG President Carlos Figueroa officially welcomed Martinez to the players’ association. “Our association will begin work to ensure that women’s football in Guatemala will grow and professionalise in the way we envisage.”

“We are very grateful to Ana Lucia for agreeing to join our association and to be at our disposal to collaborate with the development of women’s football in general and the professionalisation of our game.”

AFG is the 28th FIFPro member which offers female players the possibility to join their association. Click here for more information.
