Vincent Kompany, Gareth Bale and Robin Van Persie would have featured in the 2013 FIFA FIFPro World XI if only the votes of English-based professionals had been taken into account.

Each year, players are coordinated by FIFPro and its 55 member unions to vote for their World XI based on a 4-3-3 formation. FIFPro is pleased to announce that the players voted in record numbers in 2013, cementing the World XI’s status as the only international award truly representative of professionals worldwide.

Nevertheless, World XI selections always provoke debate. The English Premier League is widely considered one of the most appealing domestic competitions in the world, but not a single player from the English top flight was selected in the World XI for the second consecutive year.

With the assistance of England’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), FIFPro collected votes from all four of the country’s professional divisions, from the Premier League to League Two. Based on their choices alone, FIFPro can reveal a World XI which does not include Dani Alves, Xavi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

World XI 2013 by English-based professionals only: Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Vincent Kompany, Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva; Andres Iniesta, Franck Ribery, Gareth Bale; Crisitiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robin van Persie.

All votes are counted by FIFPro and notarised to reveal the official World XI players who took the stage, Monday (January 13), at FIFA’s Ballon D’Or ceremony, in Zurich:

Official World XI 2013: Manuel Neuer, Dani Alves, Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva, Philipp Lahm; Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Franck Ribery; Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Among the players who narrowly missed out, Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), David Luiz (Chelsea), Mesut Ozil (Real Madrid/Arsenal) and Neymar (Santos/Barcelona) were next in line for selection in each of their respective categories: goalkeeper, defence, midfield, attack. As such, they take their place in the 2013 World XI reserve team, selected in a 4-3-3 format as per voting regulations.

Reserve World XI 2013: Iker Casillas; David Luiz, Gerard Pique, Marcelo, David Alaba; Mesut Ozil, Yaya Toure, Gareth Bale; Neymar, Radamel Falcao, Robin van Persie.

FIFPro respects the players and the choices they made in 2013. The World Footballers’ Union also sees constant growth in the number of votes received each year as footballers worldwide show their ongoing support for a concept, first launched in 2005, which is exclusively by the players, for the players.
