The Professional Footballers’ Association of Ireland (PFAI) announced the nominees for the 2012 PFAI Player of the Year Awards. One of the nominees was a member of Team PFAI, who participated in last year’s FIFPro Tournament.

On Saturday 10 November, the PFAI will announce the winners of the 2012 Tissot sponsored PFAI Awards at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

PFAI secretary general Stephen McGuinness and Justin Thompson, country manager of Swatch Group Ireland, congratulated all of the nominees and also the players selected on both the Premier and First Division teams of the year. McGuinness: ‘We are delighted to have Tissot sponsoring our awards again this year; we’re looking forward to another big event in the Association’s history.’

All League of Ireland players (from both divisions) voted for the various awards: the Players’ Player of the Year, First Division Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Irish Overseas Player of the Year, and Referee of the Year, along with the Premier Division and First Division teams of the Year.

Among the nominees for the Player of the Year Award is Sean O’Connor. In December 2011, he was a member of Team PFAI that participated in the FIFPro Winter Tournament in Oslo, Norway. After the tournament, he signed at Saint Patrick’s Athletic. He made 28 appearances, scored 15 league goals and helped St Pats to the 3rd place and to the FAI Cup Final.

Another member of Team PFAI was also successful: midfielder James Chambers (also St Patrick’s) was picked in the Premier Division Team of the Year.

PFAI secretary general McGuinness:  ‘We have another new initiative this year as we award the Groundsman of the year. This season we have asked a players representative at each club for their pitch rating for every league game and each month we have published this information on our website.’
