FIFPro is left shocked by the disturbances after the match between Al Masry and Al-Ahly in the Egyptian city of  Port Said, whereby 74 lives were lost on Wednesday evening.

In a short statement released this morning FIFPro’s Secretary General Theo van Seggelen said: ‘Our thoughts are with the families of the 74 victims'.

'It is incomprehensible that visiting a football match can have such consequences’.

‘Without wanting to anticipate the full facts of what has happened, the tragedy in Port Said proves once again that the football pitch is used more and more as a backdrop for criminal activities and political struggle.’
