Monday 31 January marks the first edition of the European Professional Sportspeople's’ Forum; the annual gathering of all national and international unions for professional sportspeople in Europe. The organizers of this historic event are ETUC, UNI europa, EU Athletes and FIFPro Division Europe. These four unions present in Brussels, represent more than 40,000 professional sportspeople in Europe.

This European Professional Sportspeople's’ Forum is a result of the agreement signed by ETUC, UNI europa and FIFPro Division Europe in November 2010. That agreement includes a cooperation within the European Professional Sportspeople's’ Forum. The annual forum will become an important event for sportspeople in Europe with the participation of all important unions. The forum will express joint statements on EU issues of importance to sportspeople.

Good governance in sports requires the unions of professional sportspeople as one of the social partners to be involved in the decision-making process. The  unions will play an important role with the EU Social Dialogue and the EU Structured Dialogue.

For the EU institutions, sport is becoming more and more important. The EU Commission has just launched its program on sport including among other issues a revision on transfer systems in Europe. The unions of professional sportspeople welcome the dialogue with the Commission and they are committed to ongoing dialogue with the Commission on all areas of sports policy.

At the first edition of the European Professional Sportspeople's’ Forum, the following issues of common interest will be discussed:

  • Protecting the fundamental rights of professional sportspeople and securing the legal protection of professional sportspeople: social dialogue, structured dialogue
  • The integrity of sport: sports betting, anti doping, corruption, match fixing
  • Good governance: involvement of unions in the decision-making process in sports
  • Education: the second career of professional sportspeople

At the end of this special day, we, the European Professional Sportspeople's’ Forum, will express joint statements on EU issues of importance to professional sportspeople.
