FIFPro and the Professional Footballers Association of England are pleased to announce our combined support for 1GOAL: Education for All.

Today, 72 million children around the world are denied an education. 1GOAL is a global campaign which aims to use the power of football to ensure that every child in the world gets the chance to go to school. This is an exciting, high profile campaign, which is about raising awareness and not funds. We have both signed up to the campaign at the 1GOAL exhibition stand at the Soccerex European forum in Manchester, on Tuesday 2 March.

Tony Higgins, board member of FIFPro Division Europe, was delighted to register his support saying: ‘It’s great to be here at Soccerex and see the support first hand from the football community for such a superb cause. I hope that by signing as a supporter we can help make a difference to the lives of children around the world.’

As the voice of footballers in England and worldwide respectively, our support will help secure the backing of players throughout the game. In turn this will attract support from the millions needed to ensure that we can all leave a legacy of education long after the final ball has been kicked at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We will be contacting our members to encourage them to sign up to the campaign at

Gordon Taylor OBE, PFA Chief Executive and honorary president of FIFPro said: ‘I hope that by signing up to the 1GOAL campaign, the PFA will help to achieve their mission of education for every child. Education is an integral part of the PFA and we are therefore delighted to offer our support.’

Theo van Seggelen, General Secretary of FIFPro, added: ‘1GOAL is an unprecedented campaign that will take place in a unique spotlight. We are proud to offer our support at a time when the attention of the world will be on Africa.’

Education is an important issue for both our organisations. Over the years FIFPro member associations including the PFA have guided footballers towards further skills training to ensure that they have opportunities after their careers have ended. We know that footballers can’t play on forever, and the vast majority have to prepare for life after the sport. Our support for 1GOAL will help give every child in the world an education, so they too can have options in life.

Our support comes at a key time in their campaign, with the climax of the football season coming to the fore, and the official start of the 1GOAL project in April. 1GOAL Director, Owain James: ‘It’s fantastic that we have obtained the support of these great organisations. Their record of social awareness in football means that we are incredibly grateful to have them on board as we aim to make education a reality for every child.’
