Wayne Rooney has been named player of the year in England. The Manchester United striker was crowned by his fellow professional footballers during the 37th PFA Gala on Sunday evening. James Milner may call himself the Best Young Player.

This season Rooney has proved he is the best player and goal scorer at Manchester United. Though currently plagued by an injury, Rooney has already made 34 goals. ‘It's a great feeling to win because it's voted for by the players’, the 24-year old striker said. ‘It's a great honour and I'm really proud.’

Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the English players’ union PFA, paid his own tribute to Rooney: ‘Wayne has been absolutely phenomenal once again and, in his new role this season, has created even more havoc for opposition defences. When Cristiano Ronaldo was at United, Wayne played more of a supporting role, but as the number one striker and goal scorer he is now one of the best in the world, not just in this country.’

Rooney beat off competition form Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Carlos Tévez. He was also nominated for Best Young Player, but that award went to James Milner. The Aston Villa midfielder is a main-stay in his team, helping his team mates with his vision and passing ability.

'We are proud of the progress he has made throughout his career, and particular this season when he has positively blossomed in the central midfield role coach Martin O’Neill so astutely felt he was tailor-made for’, Gordon Taylor praised Milner. ‘We are also delighted that, after playing a record number of games for the England Under 21s, he has finally got his chance at the highest level.’

Rooney and Milner were also voted in the Premier League Team of the Year. The nine other players in this elite squad are: Joe Hart (Birmingham City), Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Richard Dunne (Aston Villa), Patrice Evra (Man Utd), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal),  Darren Fletcher (Man Utd), Antonio Valencia (Man Utd), Didier Drogba (Chelsea).
