Days after his impressive display in the Champions League final, Luka Modric was picked by his colleagues in Croatia as their country’s best player. It was the fifth consecutive year that the Real Madrid midfielder won the vote organized by player association HUNS.

The 31-year old Modric had another fine season, winning the Spanish championship and successfully defending the 2016 Champions League title.

The Croatian national team player does not score much (only one goal and five assists in 41 official club matches), but he is the man who orchestrates play from midfield.

Eighteen other awards were presented at the gala organized by HUNS and its media partner Sportske Novosti. All national team players were in attendance.

The awards ceremony was dominated by NK Rijeka, which ended Dinamo Zagreb’s run of eleven consecutive league titles and claimed its first Croatian championship.

Rijeka midfielder Franko Andrijasevic was voted best player after scoring 16 league goals. He was also included in the Team of the Year together with five of his teammates. Next to that, their manager Matjaz Kek was named best coach.
