Only another five days to go and they will once again all be on the same stage: the eleven best footballers in the world. Next Monday sees the unveiling of the FIFA FIFPro World XI 2010 at the FIFA World Player of the Year Gala in Zurich.

It all began on 1st October in Barcelona where Lionel Messi was the first player to cast his vote and select his favourite eleven players. Barcelona’s Argentine forward was given the honour on account of his status as World Footballer of the Year 2009.

‘I voted for all my team mates’, said Messi with a smile. Was he joking? Or not, because the way Barcelona have been playing recently, it does not seem such a strange idea for the Argentina international to say he could not wish to have any better players as his team mates.

Messi was not the only player to cast his vote. The superstar’s example was followed by thousands of professional footballers throughout the world, as illustrated by the accompanying photographs above from Portuguese and Egyptian footballers. Whether it be the big-name players or less well-know professionals, the various representatives of the players’ unions reported to FIFPro that they all took great pleasure in filling in their voting slips.

On November 25th FIFPro and FIFA unveiled the shortlist containing 55 players, who all had a chance to make the 2010 FIFA FIFPro World XI. Next Monday they will know if they have been selected.

This is the sixth year in which FIFPro has organised the selection of the World XI and the second year in collaboration with FIFA. Click here for an overview of the previous five World XIs and all 32 players who have so far been selected in this elite team.
