The Austrian professional footballers’ association is gearing up for its first ever international match. On Wednesday 18 July, Team VdF will play against their counterparts from the German footballers’ union VDV.

‘The football academies are training a growing number of football players. Their education continues to improve, but that is still no guarantee of a career as a professional footballer’, explains Gernot Zirngast, VdF president and former Profi himself.

‘Hardly noticed, there are countless players without a club, and thus without an employer. This situation of unemployment has consequences for the players’ opportunities to train and develop themselves. As a result, the window of opportunity for these players declines to a minimum.’

Zirngast: ‘Hopefully this international match between Austria and Germany will give the players a chance to showcase themselves, in order to help them find a new job in a professional football again.’

The match will be played in the stadium of SV Grödig, an Austrian first division team. The game will be part of a bigger event, that will commence on July 17th with a ‘VIP Meeting’. Leading up to the match on the 18th, author Manuel Horeth will talk about Mental Motivation, followed by a discussion on Austrian football. A charity golf is scheduled for Thursday 19th.
