The Austrian professional footballers association VdF advises clubs to improve the quality of the pitches, in order to improve the attractiveness of Austrian football. That is the main conclusion after this year’s Pitch Rating Competition.

For the first time in its history, the VdF asked players from the Austrian professional football divisions to rate the pitches in their country. After each match, the captain of the visiting team rated the quality of the playing surface.

‘All stakeholders in Austrian football are interested in watching a good football match. The quality of the football pitch is therefore of the utmost importance’, says Gernot Zirngast, President of the VdF.

Red Bull Salzburg was the winner of the 2012-2013 season. The runners-up of the Austrian league scored an impressive 9.05 (on a scale of 1-10) and comfortably beat runners-up SV Mattersburg (7.70).

The pitch of RZ Pellets WAC left much to be desired, as the club from Wolfsberg finished last (5.37). Many games at WAC’s ground had to be cancelled due to the damage caused to the field by for example heavy snowfall.

In the second division, SKN Sankt Pölten finished on top with a score of 8.70.

In total, only three out of ten teams from the Bundesliga had an average score of 7 or more. The teams in the second division performed better: only three teams had an average below 7.
