Roy Vermeer has decided to step down as FIFPRO’s Legal Director after nine years of dedicated service, with Alexandra Gomez Bruinewoud set to replace him in the role.
Gomez Bruinewoud, who has been a key member of FIFPRO’s legal team for the past 12 years, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the challenges facing professional footballers.
Under Vermeer’s leadership, FIFPRO’s legal team has expanded its influence, successfully challenging unfair regulations and ensuring players’ voices are heard at the highest levels of football governance. Vermeer’s commitment and expertise have left a lasting impact on FIFPRO and the global football community.
FIFPRO Secretary General Alex Phillips expressed gratitude for Vermeer’s contributions: “Roy has been instrumental in defending and advancing the rights of players across the world. His expertise, integrity, and passion have set a high standard for FIFPRO’s legal work. On behalf of FIFPRO and our members, we thank him for his years of dedication and wish him every success in the future.”
Gomez Bruinewoud, born in Uruguay and judge of the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber, has also played a pivotal role in major legal reforms, including the draft of the first maternity regulations for professional women players in 2021 and the recent update in 2024.
“FIFPRO is committed to continuity and building on the strong foundation of player representation. Alexandra’s experience, leadership, and talent make her the ideal person to lead our legal department into the future. We look forward to her continued impact as she takes on this new role,” said Phillips.
