FIFPRO welcomes FIFA's decision to issue a lifetime ban to Patrick Assoumou Eyi for his role in the horrific abuse scandal in Gabonese football. This ruling stands as a testament to the incredible courage and persistence of survivors and whistleblowers who, despite facing threats, ostracisation, and immense pressure, refused to stay silent.

This outcome is the result of over three years of sustained pressure from civil society, FIFPRO and the media to ensure accountability. While today marks an important step in making football safer, much work remains. Eyi was just one of several individuals in Gabonese football who exploited their power with impunity, aided by the failure of continental and domestic football authorities, including CAF and FEGAFOOT, to act.

This case illustrates the systemic nature of this grave problem, where an individual may be sanctioned, but the same governance system that allowed it to occur in the first place remains. Under the current system, national and international football authorities mutually protect each other to the detriment of players.

Football in Gabon will not be safe until all perpetrators and those who enabled them are brought to justice, regardless of their political influence or standing in the sport. FIFPRO reported several individuals involved in this widespread abuse scandal. The spotlight must remain on Gabon to ensure that meaningful and lasting change is achieved.

Remy Ebanega, president of the Gabonese player union, said: "For years, we have raised serious concerns about the governance of Gabonese football and its impact not only on today’s players but on the future of the sport in our country.

"We know that the horrific abuse suffered by players was widely known within the FA, yet many of those in power chose to turn a blind eye. Ignoring abuse is a clear breach of FIFA regulations, and we now expect a full review of the Gabonese FA’s suitability to govern football in Gabon.”
