There has been no other recent emergence in world football like that of Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old's extraordinary vision and passing ability, not to mention his appetite for goals, caught the attention of his fellow professionals who selected him as one of the finalists for the 2024 FIFPRO Men's World 11.
The vote of footballers from all over the world has determined that Yamal is among the 26 shortlisted players for this year's team of the year, which rewards individual performances between 21 August 2023 and 14 July 2024 inclusive.
Three strikers will be selected for the World 11, with the possibility of a fourth if the most voted player outside the 10 – a goalkeeper, three defenders, three midfielders and three forwards – also plays as a striker. Joining Yamal among the shortlisted forwards is Vinicius Jr, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Cole Palmer and Cristiano Ronaldo..
Yamal's 2023/24 season
The tournament that made Yamal a world star was EURO 2024. During his first full season with Barcelona, the youngster presented his credentials as a budding talent with 22 La Liga starts and 10 G+A, but his crowning glory was undoubtedly with Spain at the continental showpiece.
At just 16 – he turned 17 the day before the final against England – Yamal was an attacking juggernaut: he was the tournament's top assist provider (4), the second-highest dribbler (32) and his only goal was as spectacular as it was key. In the semi-final against France, with La Roja trailing by a goal, Yamal's stunning left-footed strike from outside the box got Spain back on track. The strike was later voted goal of the tournament.
Yamal also broke several tournament records: youngest player to play in a EURO, the youngest to score a goal, the youngest to play in a final and the first player in history to score or assist in the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the tournament.
Yamal's individual achievements 2023/24
- Euro 2024 Young Player of the Year
- Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament
- EURO 2024 Goal of the Tournament
- Golden Boy 2023
- Kopa Trophy 2024
Yamal in the world 11
At just 17 years old, Yamal has not had time to make any of the World 11 shortlists in recent years. His first-team debut came at the end of April 2023, just a few months before voting closed for that year's FIFPRO Men's World 11.
To better measure the extraordinary nature of his inclusion in the World 11 finalists, Lionel Messi – the all-time leading World 11 winner with 17 appearances – first made the shortlist in 2006 when he was 19 years old.
Post of the Year
“I think my best talent is one-on-one play. It's something that comes naturally to me and that I enjoy doing, as well as shooting from outside the box and maybe my vision.”
— by Lamine Yamal
