The new footballers’ association of Guatemala presented itself: la Asociación de Futbolistas Guatemaltecos AFG. Two days after their first press conference the footballers union organized a protest against unpaid salaries.

It took one year for AFG to arrange the establishment of the new union. Carlos Ruiz is the president, Dwight Pezzarossi is the vice president.

On behalf of FIFPro Division Americas Carlos Soto (Sifup, Chile) and Fernando Revilla (Safap, Peru) were present at the inauguration of the AFG, on Thursday July 14th. Both representatives spoke with their colleagues from Guatemala to talk about the plans of the AFG and about the prospect of being the second country from Central America to be part of the FIFPro family, next to Costa Rica.

The current situation in Guatemala is complicated. The professional football clubs have an accumulated debt of 138 thousand dollar with the players.

The AFG will be trying to have this debt settled. Last weekend, on July 16th and 17th and two days after the new footballers’ association presented itself, the players launched their first protest. During all games in the country’s premier league, the players sat down for one minute immediately after kick off.

With this action, all Guatemalan footballers showed their unity, as they demand the immediate payment of their unpaid wages. Next to that they also made clear that they want to fundamentally change the nation’s  football structure.
