Guatemala: ‘We want racism to be brought to an end’
Friday 01 March

'We are not looking for people to blame, we want this to be brought to an end', said Gonzalo Romero, president of the Association of Guatemalan Footballers (AFG), during a press conference organized to show AFG’s support to Milton Núñez, who had been racially abused during three matches in the past month.
President Romero said the Referees Committee had been approached in order to define what route should be followed and decide what should be done in this kind of situation. ‘We are not looking for people to blame, we want this to be brought to an end.’
During the press conference both AFG and FIFPro offered their support to Miguel Núñez. The Honduran player was visibly moved and grateful after hearing of the support and backing from his colleagues at both national and international level. ‘I think this will serve as an example to all clubs, and I hope things will be more relaxed’, he declared.
Milton Núñez has been a football player for 22 years and, during his career, has played in Guatemala, Uruguay, England, Greece and Mexico and, although he has been insulted in most places, he decided to call a halt in Guatemala and do something so that this kind of behaviour no longer goes unpunished.
He said, 'What I experienced in Petapa and Heredia was horrible, but I see that steps are finally being taken, and I welcome them. I wish to express my gratitude for your support and I want to make it very clear that this is not aimed at Heredia or anyone, it's directed at those who insult their fellow human beings because of the colour of their skin, or their ethnic group.'
