Peruvian union rejects sackings of footballers
Tuesday 14 August

The Peruvian professional footballers’ union (SAFAP) has expressed surprise at the way contractual matters are being handled between the temporary management of Alianza Lima and the team’s members.
SAFAP warns, ‘The Alianza Lima management, presided over by Susana Cuba of the Alba Consult company, cancelled the contracts of some of the team’s professionals, in spite of the formal complaint lodged by our institution with the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) on June 5, reiterated on August 3 for the attention of the presidency of Indecopi (the National Institute for the Defence of Competition and Intellectual Property) and the FPF.’
‘This situation of arbitrary dismissals, and harassment in some cases, blaming the economic crisis, was denied by the temporary management of the club a month later, on July 5.’
Relations between the management and the players broke down when wage cuts were announced, provoking a massive walkout by the players - up to 17 so far. The latest to leave was Jonathan Charquero, who has said he intends to demand his wages. Other players in his position say they’ll do likewise.
SAFAP: ‘It is evident that Alianza Lima is perverting the purpose of the law, for it continues to mistreat professional footballers, violating the labour rights of professional football players.’
‘As will be recalled, there are various legal ways to terminate contracts, such as by mutual agreement, but the club has opted for dismissal so they won’t even have to pay the remuneration accrued up to the date of dismissal.’
‘The club directors announced to the various media that they had contracted a new group of professional footballers to reinforce the team for the second stage of the 2012 tournament, even though our union had rejected this.’
‘It is contradictory for a team to claim it has economic problems managing a monthly payroll, and then to make this kind of unilateral decision. The only thing they will achieve is to generate a heavier debt, which will have to be paid by the future new management.’
SAFAP President Francesco Manassero added, ‘We hope that the FPF and Indecopi will have something to say about this mistreatment of football players and the violation of their labour rights.’
