Golf: Shevchenko and Sheringham are the best

Andriy Shevchenko is the winner of the European Footballers Golf Classic. The event, held in Kiev on Monday June 25th, was organized by FIFPro and Pass-for-Sport and sponsored by Bentley Ukraine. In total, 32 football legends participated in the third edition of FIFPro’s golf tournament.
In the field of 32 of Europe’s greatest football players - such as Giancarlo Antognoni, Peter Schmeichel, Chris Waddle, Michel Platini, Ronald de Boer and Stefan Reuter - Andriy Shevchenko was the hometown favorite on the golf course of the Kiev Golf Club.
The captain of the Ukrainian national team and Dinamo Kiev and 2004 Golden Ball winner lived up to his reputation. Although he did arrive a little bit late - because he first had to open the new Andriy Shevchenko Stadium - he immediately joined his flight which included Chris Waddle and Paul Walsh, and showed his class on the golf course.
The Kiev golf course proved to be a difficult one, confronting players with many difficulties and challenges. Some of the footballers struggled to cope with these conditions, others took on the extra challenges in search of glory in one of the five competitions:
- Players Net
- Players Gross
- Teams
- Best Approach
- Longest Drive
Shevchenko managed to win two competitions: the Best Approach competition and the Players Net competition. In the last competition, he finished just one stroke ahead of number two Ronald de Boer, and two ahead of number three Pontus Kåmark.
Unfortunately, Shevchenko was unable to attend the awards ceremony, but he collected his trophies on Tuesday at the office of the Ukrainian PFA (All-Ukrainian Association of Prefessional Footballers'). President Igor Gataullin congratulated him.
Number two, Ronald de Boer, produced the longest drive.
Like Andriy Shevchenko, also Teddy Sheringham won two competitions: the Players Gross competition and the Team competition. In the Teams competition, Sheringham and his partner Les Ferdinand ended on top. Both former England strikers scored 67 points, just one more than the number two team of Pontus Kåmark and Karel Poborsky. The Belgium team of Marc Degryse and Geert De Vlieger took the third place, closely beating the German duo of Stefan Reuter and Karl-Heinz Riedle to the victory podium.
